A huge majority of pianists learn to play piano without reading music. That doesn't mean that they disregard the basic principles of music, for instance learning chords and basic scale patterns but it just means that they will pick things up by ear as opposed to reading it from a musical score.

In a way this can be quite a good thing as it gives a pianist the chance to really express themselves rather than your playing being restricted to what you see from a music score. You can sometimes spot a pianist who has been musically trained because everything about their playing is very structured and although it may be note perfect it just lacks any feeling.

One way to learn play piano without the need to read music is to pick a simple song that you like and learn the chord structure. This can be done in a variety of ways such as listening to the song and trying to pick out the chords by ear, or you can very often find video footage of either the original artist or someone covering the song, and you can then learn the patterns by watching what they are doing. Alternatively you could search for the Piano chords on the web.

All these methods will allow you to learn piano without reading music, and it will free up more time to concentrate on playing.

To really expand your creativity you could just pick up some chords that you like and have a go at writing your own simple song. I remember my first song I composed, and I still playing today, as its unique and personal to me.
