Fast Twitch Muscle Fibers - What Are They and How Do They Help Me Jump Higher?

Fast Twitch Muscle Fibers - What Are They and How Do They Help Me Jump Higher?

Fast twitch muscle fibers are essential for launching the human body in the air. There are two types of people when it comes to this necessity. Type one is the person who is born naturally with a high density of them. Type two, which makes up the most of the athlete population, have to work to gain a high density. But it is possible. Here's how.

Let's look first at the three types of muscle fibers:

Slow twitch (Type I) Fast twitch (Type IIa) Fast twitch (Type IIb)

Slow twitch muscle fibers contract slowly and can sustain the contraction for a good amount of time, making them ideal for endurance events. They are resistant to fatigue but can't produce a great amount of force.

Fast twitch IIb muscles, on the other hand, fatigue quickly but can recruit a great amount of force in a short amount of time. For our purposes, these are the most crucial in vertical jump.

Meanwhile, fast twitch type IIa is less important. These fall between the two spectrums. They don't fatigue as fast, but don't have as much muscle power, as type IIb. These are recruited to a lesser degree in vertical jump training.

How will knowing the difference between these three types help me improve my vertical jump?

There are an unfortunate number of vertical jump programs out there which encourage jumping endurance, not explosion. In essence, these programs train your body to recruit slow muscle fibers, instead of fast. This is where training can be counter-intuitive.

You may feel that the harder you work and the more frequent you train, the more results you will see. But in actuality, every good personal trainer realizes that both EFFECTIVE training and RECOVERY are essential aspects to athletic improvement.

Training your endurance (slow twitch muscle fibers) for vertical jump training will not help you jump higher, but longer. Training your power and explosion (fast twitch muscle fibers) however, will increase your vertical. Understanding the way your body functions when you're working out will help you realize why training your explosion is much more important than training your endurance when training your vertical leap.

If you're like most athletes who want to leap higher, you need quick, effective ways to put on muscle. Do you want to learn actionable ways to get the results you want?
