Vertical Leap Training - Should I Use Strength Shoes in My Vertical Leap Training?

Vertical Leap Training - Should I Use Strength Shoes in My Vertical Leap Training?

Theoretically, training with the shoes seems scientifically correct. After all, our muscles and tendons behave similarly to springs. When springs are stretched, they contract forcefully. When stretched even further, they contract even more forcefully.

These shoes are designed to augment this stretching of the calf muscles and tendons, force the calf muscles to wield more power during exercise, and eventually make the calves more powerful over time. For runners, that should produce swifter, longer gaits.

But the problem is this: that's all theoretical. When actually measured by a scientific experiment, plyometric training with Strength Shoes didn't bring results any better than plyometric training in regular shoes, at least during a period of eight weeks.

Why wouldn't the Strength Shoes be effective?

One reason may be that a major portion of the benefits which accumulate from plyometric training may result from improved proprioception. This is an increased ability to respond to changes in body position and the physical tension of muscles while participating in a sport. Wearing Strength Shoes would upgrade proprioception during use, but not necessarily while wearing normal shoes. Of course, normal shoes are the ones used for very demanding regular training, performance tests, and competitive situations. Normal shoes are the most important when it comes to getting results in the game.

Worst of all, the use of these shoes was also linked with a high risk of injury, at least in a small group of researched athletes. Based on shin pain problems and the lack of scientifically proven benefits associated with strength-shoe training, these shoes should not be used until further proof is provided. I don't believe they help your vertical leap. Plyometric training, on the other hand, is valuable for athletes, but do yourself a favor: don't complete the training in Strength Shoes.
